admiring the stunning view over the Ancient Forums, that gives us an idea of the splendor of Ancient Rome, Capital of the World, and to admire Michelangelo’s genial design of Piazza del Campidoglio, jewel of the Renaissance.

Architects of the Renaissance – term which means ‘rebirth’ – considered Rome as an enormous goldmine of inspiration. The most endowed, Bramante, Michelangelo, Palladio, and, later in time, Bernini, reemployed the ancient Roman forms in completely new personal ways, perpetuating Roman legacy through the ages.

Inevitably, buildings like the Pantheon look familiar to our eyes, as their influence on western architecture was widely spread. Here we are, in front of the true Pantheon, the best-preserved Roman building in town, surmounted by the largest non-reinforced concrete dome in the world. Once a temple, it is now a church.

Our walk through the majesty of the Eternal City has now reached the Tiber, and our attention is attracted by another iconic ‘giant’ of Rome, Castel Sant’Angelo, originally built, in the same period of the Pantheon (1,900 years ago), to be Emperor Hadrian’s Mausoleum, then modified many times, it never became a ruin.

We cross the river to reach the center of Christianity, Saint Peter’s Square. The embracing gigantic oval square designed by Bernini, the enormous Egyptian obelisk standing imposingly in its center, the awesome dome Michelangelo reluctantly conceived in his old days will encourage more reflections and questions.

Our Majesty of the Eternal City doesn’t go into any of the famous buildings (you will find more tours in our Art & History section) as it wants to be an overall experience of the unique grandeur of Rome. The tour can be done at any time, in summer it might work as an evening walk, introducing the city upon your arrival.
