Heart of venice: a small group tour on the steps of Vivaldi, Goldoni, Casanova and many other Venetians
This itinerary focuses on people, rather than on important buildings or historical facts. Illustrious Venetians of any time and persons or literary characters deeply related with Venice.
Our walk in the ’Heart of Venice’ begins at the exit of the Doge’s Palace and meanders through the city, touching topic sites such as Café’ Florian, Teatro la Fenice, Campo San Stefano, Casa Goldoni, Carampane, Campo San Giacometo, where memories are dense and where we’ll conjure up Casanova, Vivaldi, Stravinskij, Mariano Fortuny Carlo Goldoni, Caterina Cornaro, Jacopo Tintoretto and many others.
The first part of our ‘Heart of Venice’ itinerary explores San Marco district, where we shall also stop to visit one of the rare artisans surviving in the area, Alberto Valese’s art shop ‘Ebru’.
Alberto, a true Venetian born (we are only 54,000 left now!) has a lifetime experience about creating marbleized paper using an ancient Turkish technique. The high level of workmanship combined with the creativity of the master artisan transform Valese’s shop into a magic world of elegant stationery and delicate and unique paper marvels.
We’ll use the traghetto, a “gondola ferry” shuttling between san Samuele and San Toma’ to cross the Grand Canal and peruse the neighborhood of San Polo (one of the six ‘sestieri’ of Venice). The pass by Palazzo Centani, where Carlo Goldoni, the great Venetian playwright was born.
We’ll stop a minute to meet some of the most skilled Venetian mask-makers at ‘Tragicomica’ and admire their production, proceeding to Campo San Polo, you’ll learn about the days when the Carnival of Venice lasted for months and was a top international attraction.
Not far is the section called ‘Carampane’, once a busy red-light district, and the parish of San Cassiano, home to the oldest public theater of Europe. We’ll talk about Caterina Cornaro, the future Queen of Cyprus, and about the great Venetian painter Jacopo Tintoretto, who lived here.
Our ‘Heart of Venice’ is now approaching its end. We’ve finally reached the ‘heart of the heart’ of town: Rialto. Past the lively food market, an attraction for locals and tourists, we stop at campo San Giacometo, a lovely square surrounded by arcades, once a world-renown banking and trading center, today populated by trendy cafes’ and wine bars, right at the foot of the Rialto Bridge.
Our guide will quote William Shakespeare – who most probably saw Venice only in his dreams! – and evoke the unforgettable characters of The Merchant of Venice, famous Venetians that exist only in fiction.
